Glimpses of the Knife

We had so much fun at last weekend’s Knife Fighting Basics workshop.  Here are a couple of photos to give you a taste of what we did.  More to come, including the always popular slaying of the melons pics.

Prepping for class is very serious work

There are a few more photos on our Facebook page, and we’ll be putting more up over the next week over there and here on the website.  We’ll also have posts on the knife attack video we shared in class and a separate post on the sentry takedown exercise, so stay tuned for those.

Faire in the Grove 2013

What are you doing this lovely weekend?  How about coming out to play with swords?

Faire in the Grove 2

Academia Duellatoria will be at Faire in the Grove at McMennamin’s Grand Lodge Saturday and Sunday.  Both Swords for Scribes instructors will be on hand Saturday, and Matthew will be there on Sunday to answer any questions you might have about our workshops, plus you get a chance to take some free short classes to check out some of the swordplay.  Come on out and visit!

Victory Over Melons, and Upcoming Events

We’ve been working on the next session of Swords for Scribes, and it’s going to be great!  The next workshop will be in July (exact date to be announced), and it’s going to focus on knife fighting techniques.  You’ll get a chace to try out some techniques using our nifty practice knives, and you’ll get to see how a trained fighter uses a knife compared to how an untrained person would do it.  And, of course, there will be fighting against produce!

Make sure you’re signed up for our announcement list to get the info on dates and times as soon as it’s available as well as first dibs on registration.

If you’d like a little taste of some of the fighting techniques we teach, Academia Duellatoria will be at Faire in the Grove this weekend at McMennamin’s Grand Lodge in Forest Grove.  Classes are free and lots of fun–come out and visit!

Finally, I thought I’d share a few more photos from the April 13 S4S session.  Here are our students after their bouts with Count Aloupe and his minions:

S4S Session 1–That’s a Wrap!

The first session of Swords for Scribes–A Writer’s Introduction to Swords and Swordplay was so much fun!  We had four writers swinging swords, slaying cantaloupes, and writing up a storm.

We’re sharing a bunch of photos on our Facebook page, but I wanted to share some here, too.

Doing some writing and talking:

And possibly the favorite part of the day:

Fruit salad! Sword vs. cantaloupe

The next S4S workshop will be sometime in Summer, 2013.  We’ll pick an exact date soon.  Meanwhile, we’re working out which workshop to do next.  Here are the choices:

  • Improvised and non-traditional weapons
  • Knife fighting (medieval European)
  • Unarmed close-quarters combat

Leave us a comment and let us know which one you’re most interested in so we can plan accordingly.  Hope to see you in class joining in on the fun!

One Week Until S4S!

Just one week from tomorrow we will be writing, swinging swords, writing, killing melons…Are you signed up?

To make sure we have time to get the last-minute supplies we’ll need for class, we will be closing registration at noon next Friday, April 12, 2013.  Make sure to sign up before then so you don’t miss all the fun!

Finally, after a long bout of the Plague of 2013, we are back and ready to dive in to the next Swords for Scribes workshop, A Writer’s Introduction to Swords and Swordplay.

The workshop will be Saturday, April 13, 2013.  Registration opens this Saturday, March 9, 2013.  Tuition is $75.  Check the info page for early bird discount info and details on the class.

Hope to see you there!

We are going to have to reschedule the first session of A Writer’s Introduction to Swords and Swordplay.  Your instructors have come down with the flu–yuck!  So sorry to have to cancel the first session, but the bodies (and doctors) say it must be so.

As soon as we are back on our feet, at least a little bit, we will pull out the calendars and get a new date set up.  Stay tuned (subscribe to our very infrequent announcement list to get the latest info).  Meanwhile, refunds are on their way, and we hope to see you soon.

Now, we return to our hot tea and resting.
